## Places to know

### Kaizen
*Restaurant | Crans–Lens road · Route de Crans-Lens 70*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--kaizen
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--kaizen
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published

- Availability status: current

Kaizen takes care of the whole restaurant. The chalet is warm and elegant, the Japanese details are light, the glassware is immaculate, and the table feels considered down to things most restaurants would happily leave alone.

Then the food starts arriving in color. Deep red tuna, orange ikura, green shiso, pale scallop; usuzukuri laid out almost like drawings, nigiri finished with things like yuzu-kosho, ponzu, kizami wasabi or white truffle. The plates are genuinely beautiful, but they are not there to compensate for anything. The fish is excellent, the combinations are clever, and everything is very, very delicious.

That is Kaizen at its best: serious Japanese cooking inside a beautiful Swiss chalet, with the glasses, plates, room and service given almost as much attention as what comes out of the kitchen.

### Le Michelangelo
*Restaurant | Montana · Avenue de la Gare 25*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--le-michelangelo
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--le-michelangelo
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published

- Availability status: current

Le Michelangelo does groups very well. There is plenty of room upstairs and downstairs, and it is a proper people-pleaser: wood-fired pizzas, spaghetti alle vongole, pasta with pesto or morels, fresh fish and veal all sit on the same menu.

More importantly, the food is very good. The pizzas have a crisp crust, the pasta comes properly al dente and the sauces have plenty of flavour. When there are a lot of you in Montana and everyone wants something different, Michelangelo makes dinner very easy.

### Atlas
*Restaurant | Bluche · Beneath Edo Japonais, around the back*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--atlas
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--atlas
- Destination: Crans-Montana

Atlas is a very weird Chinese takeaway under Edo Japonais in Bluche. Face Edo, go down the left side and around the back. It has lemon-green walls, couches, and looks nothing like somewhere that should be serving one of the best things you’ll eat in Crans-Montana.

Get the roasted duck with sweet chilli sauce on rice. The rest of the food is good, but this is different. It is fucking amazing. Proper top-five-dish-of-your-life territory. The kind of thing you still crave years later.

### Petit Paradis
*Restaurant | Bluche · Across from Les Roches*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--petit-paradis
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--petit-paradis

Petit Paradis is the auberge in Bluche, a tiny village just below Crans-Montana, directly across from Les Roches, one of the world’s top hospitality schools. Inside, it is warm and wooden, with cowbells, a proper bar and a dining room that feels exactly right for a mountain village. Outside, the terrace looks straight over the mountains. Sit there with a beer when the weather is good.

The fondue is excellent, but Petit Paradis is much more than somewhere to go for fondue. In a village this small, it ends up being the place everybody uses. Locals come in, Les Roches students spill over from across the road, professors do the same, and the restaurant becomes bar, meeting point, birthday place and general gathering spot almost by default.

And this is the OG. The wood, the cowbells, the fondue, the mountain view, the whole warm Swiss auberge thing: here it is not a look. It is just the restaurant in a tiny Swiss mountain town that everyone actually uses.

### Zerodix
*Restaurant | Crans cable-car base · Route des Téléphériques 32*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--zerodix
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--zerodix
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

The gondola closes.

Zerodix begins.

It sits directly at the bottom of the Crans–Cry d’Er lift, which means there is no awkward intermediate phase between skiing and après-ski. Boots remain on. Skis get abandoned nearby. The terrace fills. Music appears. Somebody who was discussing snow conditions fifteen minutes ago is now holding a vodka Red Bull in full ski equipment.

This is one of the great efficiencies of mountain life.

In good weather the terrace becomes a sun trap; later, DJs and live acts take over and the entire base station starts feeling less like the end of a journey and more like a minor festival with chairlifts nearby.

Do not go home first.

That would break the system.

### Merbé
*Restaurant | Crans–Cry d’Er gondola · Merbé intermediate station*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--merbe
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--merbe
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Take the gondola.

Get off halfway.

Eat.

Merbé sits around 1,950 metres at the intermediate station between Crans and Cry d’Er, which gives lunch a very specific pleasure: you are properly on the mountain but have not yet turned the meal into an expedition.

On a clear day the terrace does most of the work. Peaks, valley, snow, enormous sky. Food arrives in the middle of it and suddenly taking public transport to lunch feels considerably more sophisticated than driving.

Afterward there is an unusually good restaurant decision available:

up or down.

### Le Thai
*Restaurant | Crans · Route du Rawyl 12*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--le-thai
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--le-thai
- Destination: Crans-Montana

At some point during a week in the Alps, cheese begins behaving aggressively. Then Le Thaï becomes important.

Nitaya Faust has been cooking Thai food in Crans-Montana for years. Coconut, herbs, chilli, soups and spice bring an entirely different temperature into the week. The restaurant says the cooking has been adapted somewhat to European palates, but it has remained culturally recognizable while becoming locally habitual.

Have the curry when the mountain has supplied enough fondue.

### Moon Bar
*Bar | Rue Centrale 6 · Crans-Montana*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--moon-bar
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--moon-bar
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: bar
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Moon Bar is a small cocktail bar with house music and a crowd that becomes familiar quickly because Crans is compact enough for the same people to reappear everywhere after several days. It is useful precisely because it makes no claim to be more complicated than that. Go when the group wants music and another drink.

### Six Senses Crans-Montana
*Hospitality | Route des Téléphériques 60 · Crans-Montana*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--six-senses-crans-montana
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--six-senses-crans-montana
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: hotel
- Publication status: published

Skiing is an objectively strange activity.

You wake up early, wrap your body in technical fabric, attach two planks to your feet, repeatedly throw yourself down a mountain and then speak as though the exhausting part of the day was the spa treatment afterward.

Six Senses has built an extremely convincing argument for this hypocrisy.

The hotel sits against the slopes above the Crans gondola, so the mountain and the enormous spa operate almost as two halves of the same machine: cold outside, heat inside; legs destroyed, legs repaired; goggles, then robe. There are restaurants and bars and all the expected Six Senses wellness seriousness, but the best sequence is much simpler.

Ski hard.

Come back.

Disappear into water.

Repeat tomorrow.

### Monk’is Bar
*Bar | Place des Charmettes · Rue Centrale 19, Crans-Montana*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--monk-is-bar
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--monk-is-bar
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: bar
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Monk’is understands that après does not always need to involve someone wearing ski boots on a table.

Sometimes you want the bar in town.

The terrace works while there is still daylight; later everyone moves inside, DJs begin earning their salary and the room becomes increasingly unconcerned with whether anyone originally came for cocktails or tapas. It is casual by Crans standards, which is useful in a village where a perfectly ordinary drink can occasionally find itself surrounded by cashmere.

Go with people.

The place improves in direct proportion to the number of plans being abandoned.

### Roots Restaurant
*Restaurant | Les Roches campus · Bluche, Crans-Montana*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--roots-restaurant
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--roots-restaurant
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Roots is a restaurant where some of the people serving you are being graded.

Try not to abuse this power.

It is the teaching restaurant at Les Roches in Bluche, so dinner happens inside the strange overlap between hospitality school and actual hospitality. Students cook, serve, explain, recover from mistakes and gradually acquire the tiny movements that make professional service look effortless later: where to stand, when to interrupt, when absolutely not to interrupt, how to carry three plates without publicly reconsidering your career.

The ingredients are local, the programme talks seriously about low waste and short supply chains, and the food is meant to stand on its own. But the interesting part is watching competence being constructed in real time.

Most restaurants hide the learning curve.

Here it occasionally pours your wine.

### CaSy
*Restaurant | Rue Louis-Antille 11 · Crans-Montana*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--casy
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--casy
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Caroline and Sylvain Ogi built CaSy as a café, bar and restaurant organized around a communal table and a downstairs room. The food moves according to travel and appetite rather than obeying one national flag, and the place feels inhabited rather than operated.

Come for a drink or dinner without requiring the room to declare which one it is. The communal table supplies the looseness that more formal Crans restaurants work hard to design and rarely achieve.

### Crans Ambassador
*Hospitality | Route du Petit Signal 3 · Crans-Montana*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--crans-ambassador
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--crans-ambassador
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: hotel
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

There is an enormous wall of glass.

Beyond it: mountains.

Crans Ambassador has correctly decided not to interfere.

The bar, terrace and hotel interiors are organized around the Valais panorama so insistently that eventually the furniture begins feeling temporary. Go during daylight, because coming only after dark and then describing the hotel as atmospheric is like buying front-row tickets and closing your eyes.

Order a drink.

Look outward.

Occasionally architecture's highest achievement is knowing when to shut up.

### Le Chalet
*Restaurant | Rue du Prado 5 · Crans-Montana*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--le-chalet
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--le-chalet
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published

The raclette is worked by the fire, the appropriate level of technology for the job.

Le Chalet occupies an old dairy building in the middle of Crans and commits fully to mountain appetite: dark timber, fondue, raclette, grilled meat, roasting spit, potatoes and enough melted cheese to render further discussion of wellness temporarily offensive. Nothing here has been lightened, reinterpreted or placed inside a ceramic bowl designed in Copenhagen.

You have spent the day in sub-zero temperatures voluntarily sliding down a mountain. Eat the fucking cheese.

### New Pub
*Bar | Route du Rawyl 42 · Crans-Montana*

- Canonical place ID: crans-montana--new-pub
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/switzerland/crans-montana#place-crans-montana--new-pub
- Destination: Crans-Montana
- Place type: bar
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

New Pub has more than eighty beers, football on television, darts, table football, pizza and occasional live music. There is no scented lobby and no sommelier explaining an alpine botanical cocktail through smoke.

It performs an essential civic service in Crans-Montana by allowing the resort to contain a pub. Go when there is a match worth watching, when the group has developed beer requirements, or when several consecutive evenings of polished mountain hospitality have made a straightforward pint feel necessary.
