Rataskaevu 16 got its name because the founders apparently spent so long failing to invent a better one that eventually the street address won. The room is warm, the bread is baked in-house and the cooking uses Estonian ingredients. The hospitality is the stronger distinction. Rataskaevu has become one of the rare Old Town restaurants equally full of visitors and locals. Reservations can be annoying; the staff remain almost suspiciously nice. Tallinn's medieval streets supply the theatre. The restaurant feeds people.

Walk out of the medieval centre, past Balti Jaam and the railway tracks, and Tallinn changes centuries rather abruptly. Fotografiska opened in Telliskivi in 2019 as the first branch outside Stockholm, taking over a 1905 industrial building whose red-brick shell was kept while concrete, glass and an external staircase were added around it. Photography occupies the lower floors; upstairs the institution gradually mutates into restaurant, bar, terrace and somewhere to stay long after the museum visit was technically supposed to end. The rooftop restaurant has now collected Michelin Green Stars five years running and a Bib Gourmand in 2026 while pursuing an almost aggressive low-waste philosophy, whole ingredients, local growers, herbs on the roof, even two bee colonies in summer. But the best thing Fotografiska does is geographic. From the roof, medieval Tallinn remains perfectly visible in the distance. You have simply discovered that the city did not end there.
