## Places to know

### Contramar
*Restaurant | Durango 200, Roma Norte*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--contramar
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--contramar
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Contramar built a Mexico City institution around the tuna tostada and pescado a la talla. Both dishes have been copied far beyond the restaurant, but this is still the table where they make complete sense together: cold tuna and chipotle on a crisp tostada, then a whole fish painted red and green with two sauces.

Lunch begins late here and deserves time. Order both dishes and leave enough afternoon to finish them properly.

### Nicos
*Restaurant | Avenida Cuitláhuac 3102, Clavería, Azcapotzalco*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--nicos
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--nicos
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Nicos has spent more than sixty years treating ingredients, producers, recipes and tableside rituals as knowledge. The cooking changes through attention and repetition, one careful adjustment at a time.

Clavería is not nearby. Go anyway.

### San Ángel Inn
*Restaurant | Diego Rivera 50, San Ángel Inn, Álvaro Obregón*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--san-angel-inn
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--san-angel-inn
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

San Ángel Inn has essentially refused to participate in the passage of time. Behind the gates, the gardens remain ludicrously immaculate, the service remains formal, the tables remain properly dressed and the margarita remains exactly where generations expect to find it. Families keep returning to perform more or less the same long lunch in more or less the same rooms.

At some point repetition becomes ritual. Continue long enough and people start calling it heritage. Order the margarita. The institution knows what it is doing.

### Sartoria
*Restaurant | Orizaba 42, Roma Norte*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--sartoria
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--sartoria
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Marco Carboni's Sartoria is built around ingredients, seasonality, pasta and technique. The room is polished, the cooking is unmistakably Italian and both sit comfortably in Roma Norte. Get the pasta.

### Fugu Sushi
*Restaurant | Avenida Mazatlán 30, Condesa*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--fugu-sushi
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--fugu-sushi
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Fish. Rice. Temperature. Knife. Timing.

Fugu takes each seriously. The fish is matured carefully, the Edomae logic is intact and pieces arrive one at a time across a narrow counter. Watch the rice temperature and the knife work; the details are the entire meal.

### La Docena
*Restaurant | Avenida Álvaro Obregón 31, corner of Frontera, Roma Norte*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--la-docena
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--la-docena
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

La Docena is built around oysters, shellfish, fish, smoke, cold wine and loud tables. The seafood is handled seriously and served without ceremony.

Come with enough people to order across the raw bar and the grill, and leave the afternoon open.

### Voraz
*Restaurant | Aguascalientes 93, Roma Sur*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--voraz
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--voraz
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Voraz occupies a former workshop that still shows traces of its previous use. The cooking travels through Yucatán, Sonora, the coast and the border, using smoke, acid and heat to carry the references directly into the food.

### Los Danzantes
*Restaurant | Parque Centenario 12, Jardín Centenario, Coyoacán*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--los-danzantes
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--los-danzantes
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Los Danzantes is inseparable from Coyoacán. The plaza, trees, people wandering past and mezcal are all part of lunch.

Mexican ingredients and regional traditions arrive with the neighborhood still visible around the table. Context is approximately half the restaurant.

### Limosneros
*Restaurant | Ignacio Allende 3, Centro Histórico*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--limosneros
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--limosneros
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Limosneros occupies an old building in Centro Histórico, where stone walls, darkness, mezcal and contemporary Mexican cooking share the room. At night, the surrounding streets become less legible and the heavy interior makes the most sense.

The history is already in the building. The kitchen can stay in the present.

### Azul Histórico
*Restaurant | Isabel La Católica 30, Centro Histórico*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--azul-historico
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--azul-historico
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Trees grow through the courtyard dining room at Azul Histórico. Candles float overhead and colonial walls surround everything, giving the restaurant one of the most photographed settings in the Centro.

Ricardo Muñoz Zurita's cooking gives the room its substance. Mole negro, panuchos, cochinita and regional dishes draw on his enormous knowledge of Mexican food. The scenery gets people through the door; the menu gives them a reason to return.

### Cambalache
*Restaurant | Avenida Insurgentes Sur 1384, Colonia del Valle*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--cambalache
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--cambalache
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Cambalache has operated since 1986 on the sound principles that beef should arrive in significant quantities, wine should be opened and several people should be present.

The steaks are large, the room is traditional and the table works best with a group. Order accordingly.

### Puerto Madero
*Restaurant | Avenida Presidente Masaryk 110, Polanco*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--puerto-madero
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--puerto-madero
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Dark wood. Beef. Seafood. Proper service. Business lunches. Masaryk.

Puerto Madero is comfortably traditional. Its philosophy remains approximately: buy excellent things, apply fire, bring them to the table. The clarity is reassuring.

### Cantón Mexicali
*Restaurant | Avenida Álvaro Obregón 264, Hipódromo, near Cacahuamilpa*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--canton-mexicali
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--canton-mexicali
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Chinese communities have lived in northern Mexico for well over a century. Cantonese cooking adapted, Mexico adapted back, families stayed and a regional cuisine emerged.

Cantón Mexicali brings that tradition to Mexico City. The food is the result of migration having enough time to become regional history.

### Salazar
*Restaurant | Paseo de la Reforma 333, eighth floor, Cuauhtémoc*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--salazar
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--salazar
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Putting the Ángel de la Independencia beside the dining room is a fairly aggressive architectural move. Salazar answers it with fire, smoke and seafood.

Go before sunset, when Reforma changes completely and the monument begins lighting up outside. The kitchen supplies dinner; a major national symbol supplies the scenery.

### Gruta Ehden
*Restaurant | Pino 69, Colonia Florida, Álvaro Obregón*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--gruta-ehden
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--gruta-ehden
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Lebanese food has been part of Mexico for generations. At Gruta Ehden, jocoque, kibbeh, tabbouleh, stuffed meats and arak fill large tables built for families and celebrations.

Continue ordering until the table becomes structurally concerning. The food is part of Mexico City's own immigrant history.

### Havre 77
*Restaurant | Havre 77, Juárez*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--havre-77
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--havre-77
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Havre 77 puts a French brasserie inside a nineteenth-century house in Juárez. Oysters, onion soup, duck, charcuterie and tarte Tatin bring the brasserie vocabulary; the old house and the street outside keep the room in Mexico City. It is a translation, not a replica.

### Máximo
*Restaurant | Avenida Álvaro Obregón 65 Bis, Roma Norte*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--maximo
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--maximo
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Máximo helped establish a restaurant language that now runs through Mexico City: local producers, seasonal ingredients, European technique, Mexican intelligence, less ceremony and more actual cooking.

Eduardo García built that approach into the restaurant before supplier lists and linen aprons became standard equipment. Its influence is visible in how normal the idea now looks.

### Hunan
*Restaurant | Pedro Luis Ogazón 102, San Ángel*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--hunan
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--hunan
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Hunan has been serving polished Chinese dinners since 1993. Wood paneling, art, architecture, serious service, Peking duck and large shared dishes give decades of business lunches their own rhythm. Hunan keeps opening the same doors because the room still works.

### El Puntal del Norte
*Restaurant | Cerrada Palomas 22, Reforma Social, Corporativo Lomas de Cantabria*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--el-puntal-del-norte
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--el-puntal-del-norte
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

From the street there is insufficient warning about what is about to happen.

Inside: northern Spain. Fish, seafood, rice, meat, elaborate decoration and the vague sensation that you have accidentally entered somebody else's private dining room.

Settle in.

Order.

Some of the world's better experiences begin by crossing an unpromising threshold.

### Suntory
*Restaurant | Torres Adalid 14, Colonia del Valle*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--suntory
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--suntory
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

Suntory opened in Mexico City in 1970. More than half a century later, teppanyaki and Japanese service codes have merged with Mexican families, business meetings and decades of repetition.

The restaurant stayed long enough for an imported form to become local history.

### Bar El Bosque
*Restaurant | 13 de Septiembre 29, San Miguel Chapultepec*

- Canonical place ID: mexico-city--la-cantina-del-bosque
- Canonical source: https://jpthcorner.com/destinations/mexico-city#place-mexico-city--la-cantina-del-bosque
- Destination: Mexico City
- Place type: restaurant
- Publication status: published
- Editorial status: unmarked
- Availability status: current

A cantina is one of civilization's better arguments against efficiency.

Bar El Bosque has been practicing temporal sabotage since 1937 with chamorro, drinks, dominoes and boleros. The restored rooms kept the old bar, green upholstery, white tablecloths and the basic proposition that adults occasionally require somewhere to lose several hours on purpose.
